Net Zero Energy Design
Net Zero Energy (NZE) is coming to California in 2020. If you are thinking about building a new house, you and your residential architect will have some new parameters to deal with when designing your custom home.
The law that goes into effect January 1st, 2020 will require home permits after that date to produce as much energy as it consumes, creating a net zero energy building. The energy that will be the focus of NZE at the start will be electricity consumed by the home and its occupants, but in the future, all energy (gas and electric) will need to be accounted for in the energy usage.
Designing a home that is energy efficient will be key. Having a residential architect who can guide you in the building process is important now more than ever. Reducing the amount of electricity consumed by the home and homeowners will reduce the number of solar panels required for the home — yes, solar panels will be a must.
It will affect the amount and type of glass you will have in your home, the heating system you use (it just might be electrical), it will affect the wall construction, and Tyne location of solar panels on your home (yes it will be required).
